About

Welcome to The Spanish Armada in Scotland. This site has been set up by Dr. Kirsten MacLeod, filmmaker and academic researcher from Edinburgh Napier University. I am conducting research into the legacy of the Spanish Armada in Scotland. In 1588 the Armada journeyed around the east coast of Scotland, around the Northern Isles and various routes along the West coast of Scotland and around Ireland to get home. This research project seeks to link the histories of the various wrecks around Scotland. It seeks to connect the stories of the soldiers and sailors of the Armada with the local communities with whom they came into contact. And to tell the story of how they got home.

I am very interested in the ‘memories’ of the Spanish Armada from any families or individuals who have connections with the Armada, whether real or imagined.

Thanks to a Research grant from Edinburgh Napier University I will begin initial filming in May and June 2017. I will be filming on the Isle of Mull, the Isle of Westray (Orkney) and Fair Isle. I am very keen to hear from anyone who has Armada connections.

This project values local knowledge and participation. Please do get in touch if you would like to contribute to the research or film projects, or if you would like to pass on any information. And of course if you would like to know more.

Thank-you!

Dr. Kirsten MacLeod
